Mornings in most households are one of the most hectic times of the day. This is true especially for households with children. Everyone will be rushing about getting ready to go to school or to the office. Due to this morning rush, sometimes breakfast is forgotten. This is a shame, for the first meal of the day is important to a person’s health. A healthy start with a full stomach will get you through the day; ensure a healthy level of blood-sugar, and give you the necessary energy to last you until the next meal which is lunch.
Studies show that children who eat their breakfasts do better in school than the ones who don’t. Examination scores are higher, class performance is better. They are more active in class discussions. This is what every parent wants for their children. Therefore it would seem to be a parent’s duty to provide a good breakfast for their children. With careful planning and some creative thinking, it can is possible no matter how hectic the mornings. Fast and easy breakfasts for healthy children can in fact be done. A nutritious breakfast meal need not take that long to make. The preparation simply entails a little bit of planning the night before, and sometimes some pre-cooking at the weekends.
The quick favorites that do not require any cooking are fruit, bread or cookies, cereal, a glass of juice or milk. Simple recipes that are still packed with nutrition are the smoothies with milk and fruit to drink, homemade pancakes that can be pre-cooked and frozen then just heated, egg tortillas, yoghurt with fresh fruit, and some weekend cooked muffins. A good tip for fast and easy breakfasts for healthy children is to always have fresh fruit handy. This can be eaten by itself, mixed in with the smoothies, with your oatmeal or cereal, or you can make a quick fruit salad by cutting up into bite size pieces and mixing together in a bowl. Another tip if you are one who doesn’t like the morning rush is to wake up earlier than the rest of the family. Fifteen minutes earlier would be enough time. This way you can have more time to plan and prepare at your leisure, even if most of the food has been pre-cooked the night before or during the weekend. And then when pre-cooking for a breakfast meal, make a big batch that could last for the whole week. As always when eating healthy, avoid oils and fats, and go easy on the sugar.
Eating healthy should be no problem if your children were exposed at an early age to healthy foods, and already taught healthy eating habits while still young. In fact, no effort in teaching them should be necessary if you have been following a healthy and active lifestyle for yourself, for children naturally learn what they live. This is called teaching by example. If the parents have been eating healthy, chances are the kids have been too. Your example will establish lifelong healthy habits in your children, and you will have done your duty as good parents.
