5 Healthy Tips To Reduce Childhood Obesity

Posted on 01 September 2009 by Concerning Kids

If you find that your child needs to lose weight, there are some things that you can do to help with this. But the goal should not just be to lose weight but to keep it off as well. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is something that helps every aspect of your health, which is what should be focused on, instead of the numbers on the scale. By following the 5 tips outlined here, your child will be well on his or her way to a more balanced weight and height ratio and his or her health will be much improved.

Encourage Exercise

This does not mean that your child will have to jump on a treadmill everyday. In fact, you want to make sure that you are making the exercise fun, instead of it being a chore that the child has to complete. By getting involved with the exercise, you will show your child that it is fun and that everyone in the family can benefit from such exercise. Try going for a walk, roller blade, job, or go for a bike ride. The goal is to make sure that calories are being burned each day.

Changing Eating Habits

It is important that the entire family changes their eating habits. For the emotional well-being of your child, you should never single him or her out. Make healthy eating a family thing. Make sure that you are also eating at the dinner table, where there is not a television to watch. When people are distracted by things such as television, they tend to not recognize the signs that they are full and continue to eat. This can lead to weight problems.

Be Supportive

It is vital to the success of your child that you are as supportive as you can possibly be. Get in on the act by removing all junk food from the house. There is no reason to eat it if your child is restricted from it for now. Make sure that you are allowing some treats every once in a while so that your child can still enjoy the things child love, such as the occasional ice cream. There is nothing wrong with some treats, as long as the rest of the snacks and meals throughout the week are healthy, as all will be balanced.

Have Realistic Goals

If the goals are not realistic, the child will not reach them. If the child feels like a failure because you have set unrealistic goals, you are actually doing more harm than good. You want to make sure that you are accounting for the growth spurts that your child will have. Even if your goal is to simply stop gaining weight, your child will begin to thin out, as he or she grows a little taller.

Choose Healthy Foods

You want to make sure that your child is eating three small meals each day along with two small healthy snacks. There should be more fruits and veggies in the diet along with water. For vitamin C, go for the orange instead of the glass of orange juice as it has fewer calories and it also has fiber that will help your child feel less hungry.

When you follow these simple steps, your child will begin to drop the extra weight and will be on the right track to a long lasting healthy lifestyle.
